I definitely wanted to try to write something halloweenesque (which I typically try to do with the October song), but since we got a pretty good couple of Lex Land “Fall” tunes during 30 Songs in 30 Days, I thought it might be neat to give One Big Dark Room another specifically autumnal piece.
It’s a little bit autobiographical, but a little bit of a ghost story, meeting somewhere in the middle. It’s rare that I can pen something where I think the lyrics could be good enough to stand as its own poem, but also have a lovely melody, and somehow I managed to do that here. I’m actually pretty proud of this one.
It could be taken at the face-value of a narrator, someone like me, considering a long-lost love, and being reminded of autumn rendezvous with that person, and wondering where they went. It also has this La Llorona vibe, or like Cathy calling to Heathcliff on the howling winds through the heathered moors. Ghostly, ethereal, not quite here.
