A little late, but… at least it’s here now.

Enjoy this month’s cover of “Here’s Where the Story Ends,” a 1990 song by The Sundays.

Before ruining the expectation vs. surprise that we’re establishing musically in this track, I hope you’ll listen to it first before reading the rest of the post, and then come back :)

In order to rotate through the projects for the monthly cover, and because there hasn’t been anything released for One Big Dark Room in a while, I wanted to tackle an OBDR song next. I had in mind to approach something with a 12/8 groove (think “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”) but a song that did not originally feature it. There were a few ideas I riffed with Eduardo about, but I ended up choosing this one because (a) this is the one that seemed to excite him of the other options (b) the most requested cover during the OBDR streams is a cover of The Sundays covering The Rolling Stones... I don’t think I could ever bring myself to just completely cover a cover, so this is the closest I felt I could get and be in the same ballpark.

The 12/8 groove was definitely challenging for me as far as trying to come up with interesting ideas for the production/arrangement that I could also execute on. A few things delayed it - one of which was that Eduardo misremembered what project it was for, so the first draft of drums was woefully a little sonically “incorrect” for the direction for this particular release (I guess we have a backup moorhaunter cover for the archives…). Our schedules were already full so the need to retrack the drums protracted the completion for several days, and it also meant I couldn’t do anything to else to it until I had something closer to what would be on the recording.

Besides just my normal busy-ness, I also really wanted to take enough time to dial in the mix (to the best of my ability anyway) since this is going public and has a lot more tracks than last month’s cover. This took SO much longer than I thought… and I’ve been working on this almost exclusively, almost nonstop, for the better part of the last 5 or 6 days (with significant time over the last weeks, yet more sporadically, before that).

While I definitely still feel like an amateur producer/engineer, I’m fairly happy with this and, of course, grateful for the excuse/opportunity to practice with these releases, and I know Eduardo feels the same. I know that with practice and more knowledge I will get a little faster and they will start to sound better progressively.

Barring anything weird in the distribution review process, “Here’s Where the Story Endswill be released to the public on all major streaming services on March 31, 2023 - but, of course, as a Keyholder, you get to listen to/download it a month early as thanks for your support!

Since I was so devoted to completing this over the last couple weeks, I don’t know how exciting “debut night” tonight will be - but I will play a few songs (including, likely, this recording) and we can catch up for a little bit. The link is available in your concerts menu tab and it will start about 8pm ET tonight.

Enjoy ❤️

Thank you so much for your support!
