“Maybe Not After All”
December ‘17: New Song
well, howdy!
I hope your holidays were absolutely MARVELOUS!
Ours was quite lovely, though crazy busy. I always forget how quickly the end of the year goes, but I'm taking active steps to anticipate (hopefully!) and plan better for next year.
If you can believe it, even with the Christmas season all too recently in the past, I'm starting to put together resources for a Valentine's Day event (I'll be guesting with Bob of course here in Austin for Moonlight Orchestra, but will be doing my own show a few days later).
It's fun to work up these kind of themed shows (like the Christmas show this year which was SO SPECIAL!), because I like looking at all the different facets of the theme/holiday and try to find an interesting and varied way to represent it. A theme of "love" is pretty gargantuan on its own as well as the available repertoire from which I could choose. But in my long first list of potential tunes, among the "crush" songs, and "new love" songs, and "broken hearted" songs, and "maybe I'll meet my mate soon" songs, there was one sentiment that wasn't represented on my list - what about when the narrator is the bad guy? Maybe not the "I screwed you over" narrative but the more innocuous... "engh, this just doesn't feel right, I guess?" kind of break up that we all probably had to endure from one side or the other at least once.
This presented a challenge to me - I could of course dig more, as I'm sure I could find, somewhere a song or two that might work, but I realized I had very few of those that I could think of (or that were close) and none that fit my original "jazz standards" canon.
I also realized recently that I don't have too many songs in 3/4 - I was really inspired this year in particular after hearing "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" with a new appreciation.
THUS, I combined the challenges into this little ditty. Per usual, I'd like to tighten it up a bit and spend a little more time tightening up the lyrics, possibly adding a "verse" (vocal intro that's different from the rest of the form) up top, and maybe creating another stanza with different lyrics to replace the last "A" stanza for the ending. These are the things I'll need to think about... of course, I think it could stand well as it is.
Enjoy, and happy new year!
