For this month’s cover song video and cover song release, please enjoy this live recording of one of my absolute favorite songs ever, "One Two Button Your Shoe," a song which originally appeared in the Bing Crosby 1936 vehicle, "Pennies From Heaven."
From the moment I first heard this in the film I became absolutely obsessed with the feel and arrangement, and it's been a staple in my live performances ever since.
I dusted off my Dirty 30s Recording King for this one and just... can never stop smiling when I play this tune!
I always joke that while this song is my favorite, this film premiered a MUCH more famous song ("Pennies from Heaven") by the same songwriting team - and Arthur Johnston and Johnny Burke were nominated for Best Original Song for it at the Oscars in 1936.
This film also features another favorite song and performance of mine: Louis Armstrong's "Skeleton in the Closet!"
…What is this?
In an attempt to optimize my output in regards to content creation (for promotional ends to new folks), release schedule, and Vault deliverables, I’m bringing back the pre-Vault style “cover videos!”
This should look like:
A video of a Cover Song (Holly Frost specifically, for now) every month
YOUR NAME (regardless of tier) in the credits of said video
A mixed/mastered AUDIO file from the video
This AUDIO file will also be released to the PUBLIC (later)
… and will help me move the needle on a number of things in one fell swoop on a regular basis, even if/when I can’t keep up with anything else.
I will, however, be doing this in lieu of a new original song each month for the foreseeable future. I’ve been mentioning this for a while, but I’ve been having a hard time with the new songs for the last couple years. It’s so deflating to keep adding new songs on top of an already-giant heap of tunes that I’m not releasing when time is already so scarce. So, I’d like to refocus my time and energy on these videos and recordings while working up and putting out recordings of original songs I have already written for now.
Monthly Cover Video = Monthly Cover Release
These will mostly, if not entirely, be “live” performances of these songs, usually just me as a solo singing-guitarist (though I’d love to bring in guests when I have the ability). The plan is to record the performances well, studio-style, so that I can mix and master them and do any edits in post if necessary.
Then they will not only serve as social media content just as a video, but I can also get a public release from it that will hopefully sound decent!
As I always try to, I will deliver these items to you before they are made available to the public as a thank you for your support here at The Vault.
The One, Two… “Merit Badge”
Modeled after Boy Scout Merit Badges, I am offering a unique limited edition badge to our community for every release as 1.25” Pinback Buttons (the traditional merit badge size). Each merit badge features the single artwork emblem and release date.
While the badges will be available for purchase, I will be GIVING AWAY 1 badge each to a live attendee during the following events related to each release:
1) our monthly Vault Debut Night
2) any YouTube Premiere live party for a release
3) any IG-Live pre-premiere party, the same night of (yet preceding) the YT viewing event
4) any Crooner Coffee Hour that takes place on a release day
The 1.25” buttons “retail” at $10 with packaging, and ship free within the US. I am indeed making these individually by hand by myself. While I think they are cute and would be a fun thing to collect, any potential sales of these will help offset my costs for producing the singles, which don’t otherwise have an immediate (if-ever) return on the financial investment of making them.
