“A Good Time”
Prompt: boom goes my heart
Submission of Member: Jeff C
WOW okay this one was sneaky. Because of the prompt "boom goes my heart" being so similar to Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart (1935), I thought: may as well dig into that 1930s-movie-musical vibe and try to put together a kinda-high-energy, youthful uptempo number inspired by Andy Hardy films.
All that said, this is definitely some kind of weird hybrid between my own song "I Wouldn't Change a Thing" (2019) and a song I mentioned yesterday, I Wish I Were in Love Again (1937) (a high-energy uptempo duet between Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney). There's probably also a little bit of All I Do is Dream of You (1934) in there, too. And possibly, also, for no real reason at all besides that it has permeated by brain folds, The Coffee Song (1946).
I did NOT intend for this to be a duet originally but it just kinda happened... (with the time restraint and how crazy our schedules are today, the slim chance I might have been able to coerce Eduardo into singing the man's part for a demo on any other day is now nonexistent.) So, if you're listening for the words, they might seem kind of confusing because the subject-voice switches back and forth a couple times. This wouldn't be as confusing if you were seeing them written out (maybe), or hearing them sung between the two voices.
The first sections and the bridge actually came together somewhat easily, but then there was a two-hour block that seemingly disappeared into some kind of time-vortex while I was working on the last two post-bridge sections. It got pretty challenging. Then, for the mega-nerds, I threw in a little Pride-and-Prejudice reference in the proposal stanza, just ‘cause.
(Also, title-wise, not to be confused with “Would You Mind a Good Time?” which is a now-OBDR song I wrote back in 2008 and occasionally play live. Been writing songs a lonnnnggggg time omg and I am just resigning to the eventuality of similar names after so much output.)
Not sure what, if anything, I'd ever do with this one, but it was certainly an interesting challenge. And I can never have too many fast songs, really!
Hope you enjoy -
