I’ve had my head down trying to power through some deep work and haven’t been able to make much progress on the backlog of songs from March/April (yet), but I’ve got something new for you today!

In light of the big changes I’ll be making (more on that soon if you missed the stream last week where I did a soft announcement about it), I had new beginnings on my mind. The original conception of this song was going to be a mid-tempo, light and “jovial,” but the deeper I got into the process the more reflective it became.

This came together relatively easily: in fact, once I had an idea for the refrain (“let’s start again”) the melody came to mind pretty quickly, almost fully formed as I vocally “jotted it down” in an off-the-cuff voice memo, complete with a bridge. I did do the composition at first with the original bridge from the rough a cappella draft, but it was a little too silly-sounding with the ever-so-slightly-more-serious turn the lyric ended up taking. It makes sense, as my brain almost certainly pulled the bridge harmony from this 1950 song “Rainbow Gal,” which is a pretty silly, jovial song. Instead I went a more beatles-y direction with the bridge (but kept the lyrics I had originally written for that section), though after some more reflection it’s pretty similar to what Rick Alvin wrote for the bridge of “Oh, My!” - so that’s probably where I grabbed it from.

If we’re looking at the lyrics literally, “we” in this case is really “me” talking to myself about the new pursuit, but, of course, as I tend to try to, on surface level I’m implying that this is about a couple reconsidering rekindling their romance, and that’s a nice enough story too.

Hope you enjoy! More to come,

LL
