OBDR Livestream Tonight
“the tenth year”
On Thanksgiving morning in 2012, I received a curious phone call from Maria's father, as he was trying to locate her and consequently reached out to every close acquaintance he could think of. I'm ashamed to admit that at the time I rolled my eyes a little, thinking, "Oh god, what has she gone and done now?" but I was pummeled with the reality that something really bad might have happened this time. Shane followed up later to inform me they had found her wrecked car, but not her. A search party went out, and by that afternoon, the mystery had come to its grim conclusion, and she was gone forever.
As you probably know by now, it was around then that I not only "wrote out" the despair I felt, but also began to acknowledge the need, or at least desire, for another pen-name by which to release some of the many many songs I was writing that felt a little too dark for where I wanted to go with the Lex Land project. Thus, One Big Dark Room was born. A musical project where I could let my freak flag fly, where I could take out my angst and aggression, and write freely about grief, sexual identity, and mental health issues. Someplace where I could go and be as dark and confused and self-pitying as I wanted, to the purpose of hopefully finding some light.
OBDR is truly a passion project for me and while it's had slow and humble beginnings, I am proud of everything that has been realized through it, and that there is one sacred area in my life where I get to commune with my departed beloved friend all these years later.
The tenth anniversary of her passing was quieter than I'd expected, and, in fact, it didn't even dawn on me until later in the day. There were no phone calls or texts between the friends we shared, no altar set, and I was so caught up in my busy day that I barely took a moment of silence to acknowledge it.
So tonight I'd like to hold my own little silly personal memorial in her honor, with a special OBDR stream where the only songs on the request menu will be the ones for which she was the muse, or songs that remind me of her and our time spent together.
I hope you'll come join me if you need a little solace or somber time, at 9PM ET.

You'll be hearing from me soon with this month's deliverable, and I'm going to continue to be buried deep in finishing that(/those) up. Can't wait to share the new recordings from this passion-project with you...
