ALRIGHT! Day 28 and we’re only getting our FIRST potential “moorhaunter” track. If that sounds unfamiliar to you, I also have a bunch of songs squirreled away that are intended for a project I’ve had for years, but not done much with, called moorhaunter. It’s pretty similar to One Big Dark Room in doom-and-gloom content, but genre-wise leans toward electronic/pop (I guess these days it’s just “pop” now?). Not to be like “oh I was doing it before” but the closest comparison I could draw to an artist you would know is Billie Eilish… except I started this project back in 2010 or so, before I even knew who that person was.
Truthfully, I haven’t submitted a moorhaunter track this month yet because I wanted to spend some time doing a demo with more production on it, mostly because it’s a different kind of writing session that tends to generate different kinds of ideas, but also to give you some variation of music this month. However, it’s much more of a time commitment to do that (I also keep letting my trials of Ableton run out, and sigh I’m still not able to afford the full version), so I just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.
I thought that was kind of silly, I could still try to write something for the project even if it’s just a skeletal version of what the final vibe of it would be. For Nakia’s prompt of “heavenly gaze,” the most obvious take on that would be to speak of being enchanted by someone’s eyes… but I had the thought of someone damned looking up toward the heavens, and I wanted to use that spin on the phrase.
Just like Where Am I?, I was really struggling to perform the vocal part while trying to execute even this incredibly simple bell accompaniment on the keyboard. More because the melodic phrases of the vocal part are so damned challenging. I tried about 10 takes without “multi tracking” but I really had a hard time with it, and caved.
It probably would have been a cooler debut if I could have put even a little more production into it… but… the days are short, and there’s more to do.
Any Austin folk out there, I'm performing solo as background music tonight at the Wildflower Center. If you feel like sipping some Tito's and looking and flowers and hearing me improvise a set list then that will be the place to be! 🙂
